6 Faculty of Pharmacy Building at the University of Toronto, Canada (2006)

- {5 ~5 ~0 q- I8 o6 \The design of the Leslie L. Dan Building for the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto will provide state-of-the-art facilities for more than 1000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. In response to the rapidly expanding pharmacy department and recent changes in teaching methods, the multifunctional building centralises all teaching, research and administrative spaces - many of which had been dispersed throughout the campus in a single structure, uniting the largest pharmacy faculty in Canada.! n1 e  J, S4 d- `

' Q' J; L1 l- D% YThe building has been carefully designed to sensitively respond to its immediate surroundings, with its main mass elevated above a 20m-high, five-storey, colonnaded circulation space that matches the cornice heights of two neighbouring historically-listed university buildings and the nearby Ontario Parliament Building. The colonnade is naturally lit and provides a hub for undergraduate activities by allowing convenient access between the basement lecture theatres, laboratories and library. Two silver-coloured pods are suspended within this space; the larger of which houses a 60-seat lecture theatre and a reading room, with the other housing a smaller classroom and the faculty lounge. Wet labs for postgraduate research are housed on the upper floors of the building. An atrium runs through the building to bring natural light into the laboratory support spaces and provide visual connections between all floors, furthering the sense of community between faculty and students.% D" |, G( m9 N5 _+ X; `, Y7 ?

The Tanaka Business School at Imperial College marks a continuation of the Masterplan undertaken by Foster and Partners in the early 1990s and the third project by the practice on the campus. The 26 million building costs have been met by noted technology investor and alumnus Dr Gary Tanaka. The new home for the School will occupy a prominent location adjacent to a new main entrance for the College, which also forms part of the project.

The entire new-build element, together with a new College entrance, will be cloaked in a protective envelope, creating a year round usable atrium space within. The 24m-high glass facade will hang from roof and wind loads will be carried back to the columns via slender T-section struts. The atrium is capped with white translucent ETFE pillows measuring 20 x 4.2 metres. These provide better insulation than glass and will admit generous amounts of filtered daylight into the atrium space. In the event of fire the pillows can be released to act as smoke vents.7 p8 n' M7 Q& Z) F

! k! ]8 _( o3 \. VLocated within the beautiful and dramatic landscape at Seri Iskandar, 300 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur, the 450-hectare site is characterised by steep hills and lakes formed by flooded disused tin mines. The design responds to the physical landscape of the site and to the weather patterns particular to this part of the world. While it can be intensely hot in the sun, in the monsoon season the skies open every afternoon to bring torrential rain, creating a cycle in which the ground is alternately scorched and soaked. To allow students to move around the campus while shaded from the sun or protected from heavy downpours, soaring crescent-shaped roofs protect the pedestrian routes that wind around the edge of the site. Held aloft by slender columns, these canopies intersect to encircle a central landscaped park. Where possible, the jungle forming the park has been left in a natural state, although some marshy land has been activated to form a natural water installation.

Arranged around the edge of the park are buildings for teaching and research, contained in four-storey blocks that tuck beneath the edges of the canopies. Cafes and other communal student facilities are located at the canopy intersections, which also correspond to the entrances to the housing blocks. Marking the main entrance to the University is the drum-like form of the resource centre. Containing a library and multi-purpose theatre, it will be the chief social hub of the campus. Future expansion will see the completion of a sports stadium and a mosque - amenities that will be shared with the residents of a new town planned adjacent to the University.Google Earth中文论坛-谷客论坛-谷歌地球论坛6 Z& A* l0 j1 c3 E+ ?( c

22 The Metropolitan Building in Warsaw (1997-2003)

; a  L$ Z0 A7 _. d6 Q卫星地图,软件下载,地标坐标Pilsudski Square (formerly Victory Square), the site for the new ‘Metropolitan’ building, is one of Warsaw’s most important public spaces. This huge square at the heart of the City, is rich in historical and cultural heritage. The seventeenth-century Saski Palace and the Baroque Brühl Palace that lined it were both destroyed in the Second World War but there are proposals to rebuild them. Large crowds congregate in the square to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; ceremonial events take place in it and local residents traverse it every day. The new ‘Metropolitan’ building occupies the northern edge of Pilsudski Square, completing its missing side and re-establishing the formal volume of the square. It attempts a sensitive response to a unique set of challenges posed by the historic nature of the Square, and developed through a continuous dialogue with the Warsaw historic monument conservator. The aim was to create a thoroughly modern counterpart to the neighbouring historical buildings -matching their height, massing and materials - without resorting to pastiche. The building extends to the perimeter of the substantial five-sided site, thus establishing an appropriate presence on the Square, but enclosing at it’s heart an open drum-like public space. This 50-metre diameter courtyard will allow the building to be permeable, maintaining pedestrian short-cuts across the site via openings around the building’s perimeter and providing an important social focus, a new public quarter without competing with the dignified quality of the Square. Cafés and restaurants line its edges, a dramatic water feature surrounded by a ring of mature trees is the focal point and a ring of light, cantilevered from the first floor, provides illumination for night-time dining and other activities. This is complemented by a gently glowing halo of light around the top of the building. The building’s façades are glazed from floor to ceiling to optimise daylight into the offices and to exploit the views over the Square and the surrounding historical buildings. The desire for a transparent façade had to be reconciled with the need for the building to have the apparent solidity of its neighbours. To achieve this the glazed façades incorporate vertical granite fins which, when viewed obliquely, make the façade appear solid but when viewed head-on gives it transparency. The fins add a rich texture to the façade, which changes as one moves around it. The ‘Metropolitan’ building has a mix of shops, cafés and restaurants at ground level with five storeys of flexible high-quality office accommodation, grouped in three separate but linked buildings. It is surmounted by a ‘set back’ penthouse level also given over to offices. The underground car park allows space for approximately 400 cars. , b: Z& v. t% M0 N

' u/ j- w; ^) L8 r7 X" R, AShanghai has undergone a dramatic transformation over the last ten years, with large areas of the city that previously contained only traditional low-rise buildings now featuring dense thickets of office towers. Heralding one such area of development, this 40-storey tower is the headquarters of the Jiushi Corporation, a Chinese company that is providing the inward investment for the next wave of building in the South Bund area of the city. The competition-winning scheme is the practices first on the Chinese mainland.
/ S% A. ^7 T1 A, ~www.guger.net' w! s5 G4 h0 O: B
Occupying one of the most significant sites in Shanghai, the tower looks over the Huangpu River to the historical Bund and Pudong - the new business district. These views govern the structure of the building, with its concrete core positioned away from the river to create flexible curved floor-plates on the riverside, free of internal columns. Further animating the expansiveness of these views both inside the building and out, a triple-skin ventilated glazing system allows the tower to enjoy maximum daylight penetration without any attendant build-up of solar gain in the internal spaces. It is the first building in the city to employ such a system.
# w& }- i: K! a1 D$ p7 e
: N' t+ u* f+ j6 uBreaking up the uniformity of the buildings facade, the floor-plates step back at three points over the height of the tower to form terraces, ideally suited to conferences. Above the highest of these terraces, at the top of the tower, a six-storey glazed winter garden is accommodated - unique in a city where most towers are capped by services installations. In contrast to the novelty of these pinnacle spaces, down below, at street level, the scheme responds more directly to its historical and geographic context - a six-storey block, adjacent to the tower, contains shops, restaurants and bars in line with the street, and references Shanghais immediate urban past with a double-height colonnade, reminiscent of the citys traditional shopping arcades.

The civil courts are located on the lower floors, with the criminal courts above. The court of appeal, the highest court, is raised symbolically in a disk-like form at the top of the building – a contemporary iteration of the old courthouse’s dome. Like the Reichstag’s cupola, it incorporates a viewing platform that offers a dramatic panorama across the city. The blocks containing the courts are punctuated by a broad central atrium, which forms the processional circulation route through the building, and brings daylight down through the public spaces. 日本 87-91 Century Tower( {8 k" ~7 v9 i) q: X

- A& K) y- C8 vGoogle Earth中文论坛-谷客论坛-谷歌地球论坛Century Tower grew out of a belief that the commercial realities of speculative offices could be reconciled with an architecture of quality and distinction. Although it advances ideas first explored in the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, Century Tower is not a corporate headquarters but a prestige office block with a wide range of amenities, including a health club and museum.' Q" a4 S; g" D# ^: k

/ j% ?3 P* n5 x9 K% F# _+ W卫星地图,软件下载,地标坐标Located in Bunkyo-ku, in the heart of Tokyo, the building occupies a site subject to complex zoning regulations. The design response was to divide the tower into two blocks, nineteen and twenty-one storeys high, linked by a narrow atrium. The outer form of the blocks is defined by eccentrically braced frames, responding to seismic engineering requirements in a city where earthquakes and typhoons are very real threats. Inside, the floors are spaced at double height with suspended mezzanines between them, allowing office spaces to be column-free and to enjoy natural light and views. Narrow bridges span the atrium, enabling tenants to lease entire floors. Previously it had been prohibited in Japan to combine open office atria with open-access floor space, due to fire regulations. These were overcome through the pioneering use of smoke-activated baffles - reminiscent of the flaps on aircraft wings - which, in the event of fire, descend from the main and mezzanine floors to accelerate air-flow from the atrium into the affected floor. Fans then draw smoke across the floor and out of the building to avoid smoke migration.Google Earth中文论坛-谷客论坛-谷歌地球论坛- l0 G! c2 W; V- ?6 h
7 N# G8 E8 T  l, a$ D
Beyond its technological innovations, Century Tower also sought to harmonise Eastern and Western aesthetic sensibilities, particularly through the use of water. At the foot of the atrium, polished black granite water tables overflow to feed water walls, which in turn frame a staircase that leads to a museum for the clients collection of Oriental antiquities. The juxtaposition of light and dark and the calming effect of the water prepare the visitor for the cave-like museum with its precisely lit objects. Other facilities include a tea house, a restaurant and a health club and pool sheltered beneath a glazed catenary roof.% v0 _. V$ ?7 @2 x/ n

Stockholms Arsta Bridge marks an historic moment in the expansion and modernisation of Swedens rail network, the elegant bridge sweeps across the lush Arstaviken bay, its rhythmic contours interacting with the existing 1929 bridge. The organic wave form is a sensitive response to the surrounding landscape and the vibrant red pigment of the concrete resonates with the Falu-red timber used in Stockholms traditional buildings. At 833m long, the bridge will supplement the existing bridge, dramatically increasing capacity with minimal impact on the surrounding landscape.

, m( j- T5 }9 o' G2 b. l4 rwww.guger.netFollowing an international competition in 1994, Foster and Partners, together with Ove Arup, were selected to design the new Arsta Bridge, which would incorporate two new train tracks, a pedestrian and cycle way, and a maintenance access road. On plan, the bridge incorporates a curve, and the rounded soffit responds to the sequence of bending forces as the bridge deck sweeps over the ten pier supports, which are elliptical in section. This calming geometry is a response to the tranquillity of the Arstaviken bay, and the bridge appears to recede into the setting., |9 u3 ~, ~  L4 D

Referencing traditional building methods, the formwork used to create the rounded soffit was made of solid timber planks. The result is a natural patina on the surface of the concrete, giving the bridge a textural quality, which further enhances its subtle integration with the context. The railway tracks are set down into the top of the deck section, which helps to minimise airborne train noise, as the trough walls are mounted with sound absorbent steel cartridges. In addition, the rails run on cushioning to minimise vibration.Google Earth中文论坛-谷客论坛-谷歌地球论坛+ M5 E5 H; Y9 ^1 C9 e$ n) ^

; p9 {6 `, l- Ywww.guger.netThis museum, located in the mediaeval village of Quinson in Haute Provence, preserves and illustrates the rich traces of Stone Age life uncovered within the exceptional archaeological site of the nearby Gorges du Verdon. The architecture of Quinson is characterised by traditional stone buildings and drystone walls and the new building responds to this context by combining modern construction techniques with local materials used in their simplest, most expressive form./ b  r2 N" p0 F, C; u* O, e

/ w2 W7 o' Q  u8 p, L- UThe museum is one of a family of Foster buildings that are partially buried or cut into their sites in order to reduce their apparent scale. Here, the sloping ground was used to advantage, allowing the museum to be folded into the landscape in section. The dug-in edge of the lenticular plan a form reminiscent of a calisson, a Provenal delicacy - is defined by a long drystone retaining wall. This wall continues the line of an existing village wall and flows into the building to guide visitors into the double-height foyer, a space that is designed to be cool and refreshing on a hot summers day - reminiscent of a wine cellar, or one of the caves that the museum celebrates.

% C6 C. P* R7 N. l9 Fwww.guger.netThe building is multi-functional, including areas for academic study alongside a reference library and research laboratories. On the ground level, accessed from the foyer, a childrens teaching area reinforces the buildings social and educational programme, while its auditorium, capable of seating 100 people for lectures, can be used independently for village events. From the foyer, a curved ramp leads up to the first floor to begin the circular route around the museum display. Ambient light levels within the galleries are kept to a minimum and light is focused on the objects rather than the space. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a reconstruction of one of the caves in the Gorges du Verdon, which are inaccessible to the public. This is supplemented by dioramas showing hunting, fishing and other scenes from Stone Age life.

Set within a historic royal park, adjacent to the Fredriksberg Palace, Copenhagen Zoo is the largest cultural institution in Denmark, attracting over 1.2 million visitors a year. Among the Zoo's more than 3,000 animals, its group of Indian elephants is perhaps its most popular attraction. Replacing a structure dating from 1914, this new Elephant House seeks to restore the visual relationship between the zoo and the park and to provide these magnificent animals with a stimulating environment, with easily accessible spaces from which to enjoy them.卫星地图,软件下载,地标坐标9 d* K( S' \6 j0 f- `

; T* H4 A- j( C: K卫星地图,软件下载,地标坐标Research into the social patterns of elephants, together with a desire to bring a sense of light and openness to a building type traditionally characterised as closed, even fortified, provided powerful starting points. The tendency for bull elephants in the wild to roam away from the main herd suggested a plan form organised around two separate enclosures, which are dug into the site, both to minimise the buildings impact in the landscape and to optimise its passive thermal performance. Covered with lightweight, glazed domes, these spaces maintain a strong visual connection with the sky and changing patterns of daylight. The elephants can congregate here, or out in the adjacent paddocks. Broad public viewing terraces run around the domes externally, while a ramped promenade leads down into an educational space, looking into the enclosures along the way. Barriers between the animals and visitors are discreet, and the paddock walls are concealed in an elongated pool of water so that the approaching visitor encounters the elephants as another surprise in the Romantic landscape of the park.
( q" s& ~; f  K6 d
/ D' i8 e# g& W6 U) nwww.guger.netSignificantly, in terms of the elephants well-being, the building sets new zoological standards. For example, the main herd enclosure will for the first time enable elephants in captivity to sleep together, as they would in the wild, while the floors are heated to keep them dry and thus maintain the health of the elephants feet. Other key aspects of the design are the result of research into the elephants natural habitat. The paddocks recreate a section of dry riverbed as found at the edge of the rainforest a favourite haunt of Asian elephants. With mud holes, scattered pools of water and shading objects, it is a place where the animals can play and interact freely., v- o1 z% c5 D

The World Trade Centre in San Marino will provide living and working accommodation for the local population, but more importantly will create an exciting new public space served by shops, restaurants and cafes. It is more than a single building – it is a catalyst for urban regeneration. Adaptability is vital to the future of our cities. Working patterns have become much more flexible over the last two decades. In response to technological developments, working patterns will no doubt continue to change. We cannot predict the precise nature of these developments, but we can build flexibility into the structure of buildings so that they can continue to be useful as circumstances alter. This is the case with the World Trade Centre in San Marino. This project takes the mixed-use proposition to its logical conclusion – it not only combines apartments, offices, shops and restaurants within the same building, but provides a structure that allows individual units to be easily adapted from offices to apartments should the need arise in the future. The development also provides another public amenity – a much-needed car park to serve not only the development itself, but also the broader local community. No-one wants to look out from the new building and see an ocean of cars, and so the car park has been integrated within the site, partially buried. A concern for the physical context has produced a solution that is sensitive to the culture and climate of their place. Drawing upon the vernacular traditions of this wine-growing region we have created a pergola – or plant-covered roof trellis – covering the car park, providing both natural shading for the cars and an attractive visual shield. A building cannot be viewed in isolation but must be seen as part of the larger urban context. With its combination of office space, apartments and leisure facilities, the World Trade Centre in San Marino will create a new public focus within the city and will act as a magnet for future development. The World Trade Centre building will become a modern iconic beacon for the area and a symbol of San Marino's investment in its economic future. 卫星地图,软件下载,地标坐标6 V4 U8 E  C) }
